How Does DraftKings Work?
DraftKings offers contest that are either free or paid, both giving you the chance to win money prizes. Contests are available across American Football (NFL), Basketball (NBA), Baseball (MLB), Ice Hockey (NHL), Mixed Martial Arts (UFC) and Golf (PGA + European Tour). The relationship with golf became official in 2018 when DraftKings became an official partner of the PGA Tour.
All contests are first come first serve, so once you find one you like it’s best to get your roster in early. Once you set your roster, you will be competing against that pool of players only.
Depending on the sport and type of contest you select, there are different scoring rules. The type of contest also affects the number of people that can finish in the payout bracket, as well as the amount of payout you will receive. Make sure to read the contest scoring rules and payout details tabs for each individual contest. So make sure to study the rules and take your time to create the best roster that you feel gives you a better shot to win.
Clearly there’s lots of DraftKings fantasy content both from the United States and United Kingdom, all of which helps to give information around entry strategy. At the end of the day, ultimately your sports knowledge of players and teams makes the difference versus other players in your contest.
Winning in Daily Fantasy Sports is easier than you may think, since you do not have to finish in first to win cash prizes. Depending on the type of contest you enter, you’ll see that some contests can have a distribution of cash prizes for nearly half the contestants, with a payout that decreases as you finish lower in the rankings.
If you’re new to daily fantasy sports, you can search for low-experience contests that allows you to play without large financial outlay. Simply compete with similar skilled players, as these contests are only available to players who have played less than 50 contests.
DraftKings launched in 2012. Former Vistaprint employees Matthew Kalish, Paul Liberman, and Jason Robins started the company from Liberman’s Massachusetts home. They initially only offered a one-on-one baseball game. DraftKings launched this contest on the MLB’s opening day in 2012. By April 2013, the MLB put an undisclosed amount into DraftKings. In doing so, they became the first sports league to invest in a DFS company.
DraftKings continued to secure venture capital funds after collecting $24 million from a combination of 4 venture capitalist organisations. Such outside money was necessary when considering that their rival, FanDuel, was also quite good at drumming up investments. By the close of 2013, DraftKings paid out over $50 million in prizes through its various contests. It had also accumulated 1 million registered players in just over 20 months.
2014 saw them sign a deal a deal with the NHL to become the official DFS brand of North American professional hockey. They also purchased DraftStreet, the third-largest DFS site, instantly boosting their membership base by almost 50%. To drive further growth, they signed a $250 million advertising deal with ESPN and took on another $300 million of investment from multiple sources including Fox Sports.
In 2017, DraftKings began exploring a merger with FanDuel. This proposed merger would consolidate expenses and create a company with over 5 million registered users. Both companies were prepared to go through with the merger. However, the Federal Trade Commission blocked the move in July 2017, taking exception to the fact that this merger would give the company command of more than 90% of the daily fantasy market.
FanDuel since has been purchased by Flutter Entertainment (formerly Paddy Power Betfair), leaving DraftKings as the only US-owned player in the Fantasy Sports market, and many will continue to use DraftKings as a daily fantasy site as the industry continues to grow.
