Established in 1997, 888 Holdings plc is now a global leader principally across online gaming, but with a growing Sportsbook product in the guise of 888Sport. Gaming titles 888 Casino and 888 Poker are now market-leading with a worldwide reach, making 888 a truly iconic brand online. The heritage of the business goes back to the earliest time of commercial online activity in 1997 when Virtual Holdings Limited was founded by Israeli entrepreneurs Avi and Aaron Shaked and Shay and Ron Ben-Yitzhak. The first online casinos were being established and the 2 sets of brothers saw a huge opportunity to use Antigua, where Virtual Holdings gained a gaming licence, to base, launch and develop a cutting-edge online casino website. In May 1997 Casino-on-Net was launched which soon became one of the most popular online casinos, with game play which attracted a growing customer base over the next 4 years.

In 1998 a new company was established in Israel named Random Logic Limited. This company was to provide research, development and marketing services to Virtual Holdings Limited. Mass expansion as the internet exploded in both the United States and Europe was the goal, reaching new markets, using new technologies and media to offer the group’s products directly to users. 2002 was a momentous year just 4 years after the launch of the company. The launch of Pacific Poker marked the first steps into the online poker, backed-up by the launch of another new casino site – Reef Club Casino – which is still very much alive today. However 2002 also saw the birth of the 888 brand – a brand which is now globally renowned. The launch of 888.com was a major step for Virtual Holdings Limited as they wanted to take this brand forward with not only online but offline advertising as well. So Virtual Marketing Services (UK) Limited, was established in London to source its offline advertising in the key UK market.

During the following year, 888 obtained a gaming license in Gibraltar through another subsidiary company Cassava Enterprises. Its servers and its customer support centre, plus central HQ were moved from Antigua to Gibraltar as the company sought to concentrate its operations in Europe. Further additions to its range of products followed, with an enhanced version of Casino-on-Net being launched to mass acclaim. The company had established itself as a leader in the market.

By 2005 the now 888 Holdings wanted to expand via public listing finance and its change of name also signified that the 888 brand would be the a core growth tool ongoing. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange in October 2005 and became 888 Holdings PLC. 888 also became a founding member of the eCOGRA – the first formal, player protection, self-regulation program to the online gambling industry. 2006 saw 888 have to pull out of the United States as online gambling was banned – but in January 888 Casino launched a totally new website with an enhanced customer experience and graphical user interface. This was the first time true video slots as we know today were introduced to the market. Despite serious discussions between both 888 Holdings and UK mammoth bookmaker Ladbrokes a proposed merger never occurred. The size of the business growth was obvious as revenues grew by $56 million from 2006 to 2007. 888 was a casino leader who established gambling operators were taking very seriously. 888 also recognised that expansion in other gaming verticals were required so 2007 saw them purchase Bingo business Globalcom Limited. Globalcom had built the leading bingo network, which still runs today under 888 Holdings ownership. Even today this networked referred to as Dragonfish is the largest UK online bingo network – powering not only 888 Bingo and 888 Ladies, plus other 888 owned-brands such as Bingo Bongo, but also other independent operators such as Foxy Bingo and Cheeky Bingo. They paid $43.4 million in up-front cash.

By 2008 888 Holdings became a FTSE 250 Index company and again their expansion accelerated based upon the 888 brand, although their main online casino was still Casino-on-Net. Sports betting was a huge opportunity for the business and sure enough 888Sport was launched in March 2008 focussing on the United Kingdom and European market. With 888 Poker launched in 2002 and 888 Ladies founded in February of 2008, 888 Holdings now had trading products across Sportsbook, Casino, Poker and Bingo.  2009 saw the Gibraltar based business re-brand their B2B subsidiary as Dragonfish and more tellingly their focus on Bingo expansion continued with the purchase of Wink Bingo for £35.5 million. That purchase was interesting for a couple of reasons as the very successful Posh Bingo site was part of the deal, and Wink Bingo’s two owners who received their windfall were never publicly disclosed.  888’s acquisition of the site was followed by a TV ad campaign that included projecting the Wink Bingo logo onto the Houses of Parliament. Post 2008 banking crisis, 888 Holdings also tapped into the recession situation by launching Reef Club Casino in 2009, which focussed on giving a players a cost effective way of playing online casino and slots.

It took until 2010 for 888 Holdings to finally re-brand Casino-on-Net into the 888 family and this was part of a huge re-brand project which brought 888 in line with what we see today graphically. The look and feel of the umbrella brand was updated early in the year and sub-brands refocused to reflect the four core gaming products — 888 Casino, 888 Poker, 888 Sport and 888 Bingo. In 2010 888 also purchased Mytopia for $18 million in a bid to access a social gaming platform and mobile technology which could be incorporated across its trading sites and Dragonfish B2B partners. Group income in 2010 was up to $262 million with registered accounts at 8.7 million.

March 2011 marked 888’s return to the United States where 888 Holdings division Caesars Interactive Entertainment gained regulatory approval in Nevada to market its online products. In July 888 also took advantage of the Italian regulated market for online casino being opened by taking 888 Casino into the 9th biggest economy in the world, Italy. Dragonfish won two of the most prestigious awards at the eGaming Review B2B Awards: Poker Software of the Year and Bingo Supplier of the Year. 2012 saw 888 become the 4th largest poker operator globally and 888 also won an eGaming license in Spain and launched 888.es with Sports, Casino and Poker products. Revenue was up to $376 million, with registered accounts at 13.1 million, up 4.4 million in only 2 years.

May 2013 saw 888sport re-launch, with the online sportsbook now on the Kambi Sports Solutions platform which Unibet also uses. It also launched more products in the United States across Delaware, New Jersey and Nevada. Highlighting the quality of their gaming products 888 Holdings won Poker Operator of the Year, Casino Operator of the Year and Best Operator of the Year categories at the eGaming Review Operator Awards. 2014 was most famous for 888 Holdings turning down an offer to acquire the company for £700 million from William Hill. They came knocking again in 2015 with an improved £750 million offer, which 888 took as seriously as detailed talks. However despite CEO (at the time) Brian Mattingley thinking the deal was strong, the controlling Shaked brothers rejected the offer. Mattingley by the end of the year was moved ‘upstairs’ and March 2016 saw Itai Frieberger appointed as CEO.

Now employing 1,700 people across Gibraltar, Israel and United Kingdom operations, 888 Holdings is a huge force in not just European, but global online betting. Revenue across the group was $546 million, $480 million of which was from its own trading sites. Casino made up $291 million of revenue, with sport almost doubling in revenue year-on-year up to $55 million.

New depositors were 1.2 million across 2016 and 888Sport’s growth can be seen in the fact that their site is now busier than BetVictor, Boylesports, Stan James and Totesport.
